I’ve always worried about money. Overly reliant on my job, no savings, no family help. I’ve scraped by, but don’t really have a nest egg as prices keep climbing. My skill set isn’t super useful, and I’ve felt the world pass me by.
I used to go on long walks in the woods, exploring new areas and sometimes getting some mean tick and mosquito bites. One day, I stumbled upon an old mineshaft and stupidly decided to explore it. Near the bottom of a steep drop, I noticed a collapsed section and started to excavate it. Sort of as a hobby, just to see what was down there. Day by day, rock by rock, it became a bit of an obsession. My friends had no idea where I was spending my evenings. I felt possessed.
When I was near the end, I saw a skeleton. It would have been scary if I didn’t feel empathy for the poor bastard. Dying alone here in the dark. It seemed to be pointing at something. Looking closer, I saw a glimmer on the wall.
Fucking gold. Holy fuck.
I started widening the tunnel and saw it was a wall of solid gold, covered in grime. A small piece was loose, so I grabbed it, just to confirm. Then I covered the area back up in case it was discovered.
The excitement flooded me. This could be it. This could be what frees me from my shit job and shit house and shit options for my shit life. But I had work to do. I had to translate this discovery into actual safety.I covered my tracks and buried what I had discovered, playing it cool.
The next day, I woke up early to go to a local pawn shop to confirm it was indeed real gold. He gave me $400 for it, which meant it was probably worth $4,000. I knew I was getting ripped off, but I had so little money that I couldn’t even afford to get more of the gold out of the mine anyway.
First, I got some tools to extract the gold and rented a safe-deposit box to store it. My plan was to slowly and quietly go back to my mine and, piece by piece, accumulate gold nuggets and store them safely. The end goal was cash in my bank account, but for now I had dirty gold pieces near the larger deposit.
I barely slept that first week. Every night I wondered if someone had discovered the mine, or followed me there. I’d lie awake thinking of everything that could go wrong, then go back the next day to check on it. Whenever I carried gold into town, I tried to act normal, like I was just running errands. It was surreal to stand in line next to strangers with thousands of dollars in my pocket.
After a few days, I realized there was a LOT more gold than I had anticipated. I needed to accelerate my plan a bit and find an actual gold dealer who would give me a fair price. That week, when I was off work, I shopped around and found an online dealer who seemed very legit. I met up with them, got an appraisal, and ended up getting over $2,000.
I immediately bought a gun. I don’t know why, just felt right at the time. I also bought a nice jacket and fixed up my broken-down car. Maybe not the smartest, but the anxiety of my discovery had been eating me alive, and I didn’t want nothing to show for it. I also got my tooth fixed that had been bugging me for years.
I had worked out a schedule with the dealer to slowly start selling the gold I found. No details, no taxes, just cash. I quickly started running up against some limits with my equipment, so I started buying better gear. When I was getting fist-sized nuggets of gold, I realized I needed to upgrade my buyer again. This was getting into the $100k range, and simple deposits weren’t working.
I ended up working out a deal with my bank to have a formal contract. I had to pay taxes, which sucked, but at this scale it didn’t bother me. They never even asked where the gold came from. I just said I’d inherited it.
At one point, I was worried they were following me, so I had someone check my car. Fuckers planted a tracker. I’m not an idiot. I switched plans after that. Moved my money out of the bank too. Never said why.
At this point, I had about a quarter of a million saved up after taxes. I quit my shit job, got a better apartment nearer to the mine (I was tired of driving an hour every day), and found yet another buyer.
The mine ended up being larger and deeper than I had anticipated. I didn’t work out the exact figures since there was too much unknown, but I started selling a few hundred thousand dollars’ worth of gold per trip, being cautious still to cover my tracks.
Eventually, I had accumulated a million dollars. I hadn’t told a soul yet. I’d hired some security professionals to clean up my online presence and data to stay quiet, even a lawyer to cover me, sharing some, but not all, details.
I was still terrified of losing it. I’d check my accounts multiple times a day, worried about the bank collapsing, someone stealing the gold, or something going wrong with the mine. I had more money than I’d ever imagined, but somehow I still didn’t feel safe.
After that, it was actually pretty smooth sailing. I was doing it all manually but had gotten a larger car and a better method of delivery. It felt like legal Breaking Bad. Or even a video game, solving one puzzle at a time with a guaranteed rapid payoff to invest in a better system. I was still pretty amped about the whole thing, but the stress was getting to me.
I set up doctor’s appointments, got a therapist, and some support systems. I didn’t want to live in this rural shithole forever, so I ended up buying a house in the city nearby. Making sure to have a secure vault secretly brought in and a strong security system.
Now, I had a secure house, a strong vault of gold, a clear way to cover my tracks and get more, and a real nest egg. I had reached a new level of financial independence I had never dreamed of, like winning the lottery and keeping my identity a true secret.
All told, I had made about $10 million and split it up into different bonds, stocks, accounts, and my house. I did the math over and over. Even with conservative investment returns, I could live comfortably off the money for the rest of my life without needing to work again. I’d never have to worry about losing my job, paying for an emergency, or running out of savings. I had a nice setup with a gaming system, hot tub, movie system, a dog, and solid resources. I had completely moved up into the upper class.
Eventually, I just stopped moving the gold at all.
Then, I buried the mine.
I know, I could have been more generous, but I figured I was safe. I’d gotten what I needed in a secure way and just wanted to get used to a level of safety I had never experienced.
So that was that. I was able to pursue classes, arts, and passions. Dating, meeting new people, and seeing movies. I never told anyone my story, just breathed in the comfort and safety, processing some childhood trauma with my therapist.
For a while, I still checked my accounts constantly, worried something would happen. But gradually, I stopped. I didn’t need to check anymore. The money was there, my house was paid for, and there was nothing I needed to do.
It was completely luck, I recognize that. The best thing I did was never panic and stay steady until I had reached a safe level, and was able to let it ripple throughout my life. I felt like the Count of Monte Cristo without revenge, building generational wealth purely from luck.
My financial struggles were entirely over. I was free and financially independent, and finally able to have a sense of safety for the rest of my life.
There was still plenty of gold down there. I just didn’t need it anymore.
